After completing sea trials, the Arcturus was commissioned on June 1, 1945, with Captain Francis W. Schmidt in command. The ship was assigned to the Pacific Fleet and sailed to Pearl Harbor to begin its service.
In the years following World War II, the Arcturus was involved in a variety of missions, including supplying American forces during the Korean War and supporting the US Navy’s Operation Castle, a series of nuclear tests conducted in the Pacific in 1954.
During the Vietnam War, the Arcturus continued its important role in supplying American forces in Southeast Asia. The ship made numerous trips to ports in Vietnam, Thailand, and the Philippines, delivering much-needed supplies and equipment to the troops on the ground.
In addition to its supply missions, the Arcturus also played a role in humanitarian efforts. In 1964, the ship was dispatched to assist in the aftermath of the Alaskan earthquake, which was one of the most powerful earthquakes ever recorded. The ship helped to deliver supplies and transport injured people to safety.
After more than 30 years of service, the Arcturus was decommissioned on December 20, 1976. The ship was struck from the Naval Vessel Register on September 30, 1977, and was eventually sold.
In recognition of its service, the Arcturus received numerous awards and commendations, including the Navy Occupation Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, and the Vietnam Service Medal. The ship also earned two battle stars for its service in the Korean War.
The USS Arcturus was not only a critical component of the US Navy’s logistics capabilities, but it also served as a symbol of American power and resolve.
